Things to Do

You’ll have plenty of downtime during this crazy weekend. A lot of it will probably be spent hanging out, exploring and walking the streets of Charleston. Just in case we have a few fun things planned for you that you are invited to. Remember to pace yourself. It’s a marathon not a sprint.

Friday Night Party

When: Friday May 24th
Time: 7 to 10 pm
Where: College Lodge First Floor Louge
What: BYOB and bring a sides, chips or dessert to share if you wish. The Council will provide some munchies as well. Continue our annual tradition of The Abominable Hootenanny so bring your guitar, uke, harmonica, etc.. Drop your bags and come hang with your band mates as we kick off our Spoleto weekend. We’ll be hanging out in the courtyard playing guitar, singing, making last minute costume adjustments, painting toenails…No one parties like an Abominable parties.

Still up for an adventure? Join the after party at Tommy Condons (160 Church St, Charleston, SC 29401). Charleston! We’re here!

Beach Trip!

You spoke. We listened. We’re trying something new. This year’s beach outing will be at Folly Beach County Park!

When: Sunday, May 26th
Time: Several hours after the Patriotic Gig
Where: Folly Beach County Park,
1100 W Ashley Ave, Folly Beach, SC 29439

What: Bring a blanket and/or chair, picnic snacks, tunes, and your favorite beach gear! It can be windy so bring warm clothes, especially if you plan to stay until dark. Mother nature provides the primary bathroom facility, so plan accordingly. Warning: Alcohol is not allowed on the beach (steep fine)! No glass on the beach, either, please.

Directions to the Beach from WP Lot (Warren Street between St. Philip and King Streets)

    • Exit parking lot on Warren Street and turn right on Warren Street, then left on St. Philip Street.
    • At the second light, turn right onto Calhoun Street
    • In 0.8 miles (at Courtenay Drive/ Roper  Hospital), keep left to continue on SC-30 W/James Island Expressway/Folly Beach
    • In 2.9 mi, use the left 2 lanes to turn left onto State Hwy. 171/Folly Rd.
    • Go 6.3 mi and take the bridge over to Folly Beach. WATCH your speed! 25 mph!
    • Drive through their small commercial district. Pass Taco Boy on the right, and turn right onto W. Ashley Ave.
    • Stay on W. Ashley Ave. for 1.5 mi. to the County park
    • Either pay at the gate to park ($15 per car) or find parking outside the gate and walk in for free.
    • Once you’ve parked, pass the pavilion and go to the end of the parking lot.  Walk out from the end of the lot.

Note that using this part of the beach will be much quieter, but we are also outside the lifeguard zone and the beach chair/umbrella concession zone. This part of the beach is closest to a blue porta-potty. There is a nicer bath trailer with AC and outdoor shower platforms/changing nearer the pavilion.

Wheelchair access:  The mat to the beach is at the first access past the bathroom trailer; two beach wheelchairs are on site, no reservation – first come first served. To reserve a beach wheelchair in advance, call Folly City Hall at 843-588-2447. If you need a lift in a John Deere out to the beach, go to the manager on duty at the office trailer and they will be glad to take you out.  (Tell them Charlie says so if they question it.) The John Deere option may be better for mobility issues since we are setting up pretty far from the mat to the beach.

Safety note for all the barrier islands: if you walk near the end/inlet, where the tide flows in and out, you should not go in the water.  There is a high drowning risk because of the tidal flow.

If you prefer to stick with tradition and go to Sullivan’s Island, here’s the info for you:

Where: Sullivan’s Island (2210 Middle Street Sullivan’s Island, SC 29482)
